Another Year of Planting with Treeapp and Finding Ways to Reduce our Overall Carbon Emissions.
LMS Highways started planting trees with in 2023, we recognise that within our industry we produce a large amount of Co2 and have a responsibility to the environment beyond legal and regulatory requirements. We aim to follow and promote good sustainability practice, to reduce the environmental impacts of all our activities along with offsetting carbon as we find our way to being carbon neutral.
In 2021 National Highways formally known as Highways England announced its ambitious new carbon plan that will see it rapidly cut carbon from road construction, maintenance and operations, and support the transition to zero emission vehicles. Contractors and suppliers will be required to act by making commitments to reduce carbon year-on-year by using the latest technologies, so that by 2040 all road maintenance and construction carried out on the Strategic Road Network will be net-zero.
From 2021 we began recording our carbon produced each year with the expectation that this would be later offset once we found a reputable and regulated company. In 2023 we found Treeapp and got planting to help offset our project Co2.
Treeapp is a global tree planting organisation, operating sites across with world and has received recognition from a number of international newspapers and Sir David Attenborough. Their goal is to improve the world we live in. Aiming to do that by enabling people to easily plant trees, absorb their carbon footprint and have a more sustainable lifestyle, and by helping organisations spread the word about their sustainable products and services.
Our efforts are not just focused on offsetting, we were proudly the first tier two contractor in the highways sector to achieve PAS 2080:2023 carbon management accreditation. PAS 2080 guides the management of carbon across the lifecycle of buildings and infrastructure and supports the transition to a net zero carbon economy by 2050 and requires close collaboration across value chain members.
The standard recognises that LMS Highways has:
- Strategies in place to reduce carbon
- Making an important contribution to tackling climate change
