LMS Highways Ltd.Just under 2 years ago, the Directors of LMS Highways started to investigate wider opportunities available as a natural extension of their popular and respected highway repair solutions.
Six months later, the company launched LMS Civil Solutions. Enlisting the services of industry-veteran and self-described ‘concrete-nerd’ Paul Burton, ‘Nobby’.
Since the launch at the beginning of 2016, the company has undertaken work across several diverse projects, some of these being standalone civils projects and others were a natural partnership between LMS Highways and LMS Civil Solutions offering ‘kerb to kerb’ highways packages. All having great customer satisfaction in common.
One of the very first schemes undertaken was in Newport Pagnell for a major motorway maintenance depot. The task was to construct a ring beam and large concrete bay for a brand new salt barn, storing up to 5,500 tonnes of salt. For various reasons prior to LMS Civil Solutions’ engagement, the team were provided with 3 weeks instead of the usual 8 to complete the initial phase of the project which also meant a reduced operating space.
The team delivered on-time and on-budget enthusing a project supervisor to comment:

One service from the LMS Civil Solutions team that offers an outstanding and consistent result is their concrete bay replacement service, which can be applied to motorways, major trunk roads and even runways. Within this process partly designed and perfected by Paul Burton, bays are vacuum-lifted, removed, prepared and re-poured in a single overnight closure, allowing the road to be safely re-opened in time for the morning rush-hour.
LMS Civil Solution gangs have carried out bay replacements in Norfolk, South Yorkshire and Essex on behalf of major contractors and in most cases have been asked to provide further kerb to kerb service offerings such as concrete repairs, joint sealing and road marking. This provides their clients with a single point of contact, accountability and an achievable 10-15% savings. Paul Winter, Managing Director maintains that they are unique in the marketplace in offering such a comprehensive one stop solution.
“We’re very aware from seeing examples in the industry that it’s easy to call yourself a one-stop shop but we genuinely feel that we’re able to live up to that expectation and our recent achievements with major tier 1 providers and DBFO clients has proven this.”
Throughout the summer, the crew turned their attention to a bridge refurbishment project in Bedfordshire which involved a substantial amount of demolishment and rebuilding. The bridge is used by a local farm to enable cows to cross to other parts of their land.
During the process, areas of the old structure were found to be in a worse state of repair than originally anticipated. Due to environmental sensitivities and the need to ensure flood defences were kept in optimum condition throughout the work, the LMS Civil Solutions team collaborated with the customer to work out a suitable resolution. The customer was extremely satisfied with the solution provided and the bridge was successfully reopened.
As the year closes, the LMS Civil Solutions team are working on a major Concrete Bay Replacement scheme in Kent and a substantial scheme at one of the UK’s largest airports on behalf of a Tier 1 provider. Paul Winter is understandably optimistic for the future!
